Description

Overview

MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid mitochondrial-derived peptide (sequence MRWQEMGYIFYPRKLR) encoded within the 12S rRNA region of the mitochondrial genome. It was identified in 2015 by Lee, Cohen and colleagues at the University of Southern California. Supplied as a lyophilised powder for in-vitro and preclinical research.

Research background

The founding paper is Lee et al., Cell Metabolism 2015, which reported MOTS-c’s effects on AMPK signalling, folate–methionine metabolism and glucose handling in mouse models. Subsequent work has examined its translocation to the nucleus under metabolic stress and its regulation of nuclear gene expression. It is studied as a tool for mitochondrial–nuclear communication research. Human data are limited to observational measurements of endogenous levels.

Certificate of analysis

Every lot is tested by an independent US laboratory. The certificate for the lot you receive is linked in the product details above and carries the same lot number as the vial label. New to reading one? How to read a peptide certificate of analysis.

Handling and storage

Store the lyophilised powder at −20 °C, sealed and protected from light, and bring the vial to room temperature before opening. After reconstitution keep the solution at 2–8 °C in the dark. See how to reconstitute a lyophilised peptide (with calculator) and peptide storage and shelf life.

Frequently asked questions

What does ‘mitochondrial-derived peptide’ mean?

A short peptide encoded by a small open reading frame in mitochondrial DNA rather than the nuclear genome. MOTS-c was the first such peptide shown to act on metabolic signalling.

Is MOTS-c stable in solution?

It contains two methionine residues, which are oxidation-prone. Reconstitute what will be used in the near term and keep the solution cold and dark.

Which lot certificate applies?

The one linked above, matched to the lot number on your vial.

What diluent?

Bacteriostatic or sterile water — see the reconstitution guide and calculator.

Human or veterinary use?

No. Research use only.

Research use only. All products are supplied for in-vitro and preclinical laboratory research only. Not for human or veterinary use, not for diagnostic or therapeutic use. Purchaser must be 21+ and accept the Research Use Acknowledgement.
