Description

Overview

Melanotan II is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide analogue of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), developed at the University of Arizona in the 1980s. It is a non-selective agonist at melanocortin receptors (MC1R, MC3R, MC4R, MC5R). Supplied as a lyophilised powder for receptor-pharmacology and pigmentation research.

Research background

Melanotan II was developed by Hruby, Hadley and colleagues as a stabilised, cyclic α-MSH analogue and is widely used in the literature as a reference melanocortin agonist. Published work covers melanocyte pigmentation assays in vitro, MC4R signalling in rodent models, and receptor-selectivity comparisons with later analogues. It is not an approved medicine in any jurisdiction and is supplied here solely as a research reference compound.

Certificate of analysis

Every lot is tested by an independent US laboratory. The certificate for the lot you receive is linked in the product details above and carries the same lot number as the vial label. New to reading one? How to read a peptide certificate of analysis.

Handling and storage

Store the lyophilised powder at −20 °C, sealed and protected from light, and bring the vial to room temperature before opening. After reconstitution keep the solution at 2–8 °C in the dark. See how to reconstitute a lyophilised peptide (with calculator) and peptide storage and shelf life.

Frequently asked questions

How does MT-2 differ from PT-141?

They share the same cyclic core. PT-141 has a free C-terminal acid where MT-2 has an amide, which changes receptor selectivity. Both are supplied as research reference compounds.

Is it light-sensitive?

Yes — it contains tryptophan. Store the lyophilised powder and any solution protected from light.

Is this an approved product anywhere?

No. It is a research chemical with no regulatory approval, and is not for human or veterinary use.

Certificate of analysis?

Linked above, lot-matched to your vial.

Reconstitution?

Bacteriostatic or sterile water; see the Learn guide.
